A while back I commented on how rest areas on the east coast were being closed down. South Carolina had completely shut all of them down, NC was busy closing some, and VA closed a good number of rest areas due to state budget cuts. Whatever.

Now it seems rest areas all over the country are being shut down for the most powerful reason of all - money. Yup. No matter how ridiculous subtle reasoning may be, all it takes is for one politician to scream out "budget" and they've found a rock-solid argument to close or do away with our rest areas.

I happened to be channel surfing last week when I saw the story on "The Daily Buzz" (a morning show that comes on around the same time as the "Today" show and "Good Morning America". )
After they mentioned a variety of reasons why rest areas were closing all over the U.S., they finally mentioned the money angle. What a shame.

I see travel plazas replacing the rest areas because they make the state more money, they make the business owners more money, and as long as we can squeeze a few dollars out of John Q. Public's unemployed wallet, why not go for it?
